The white-tailed deer is one of the most popular big game species in Texas.  With over 1 million hunters annually, deer hunting is an important economic activity. Because 95% of Texas is privately owned, many of the state’s deer occur on non-public land. In order to take advantage of this economic opportunity, private landowners and wildlife managers can manage the population of deer on their property.

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service’s Wildlife and Fisheries Unit has developed a new application to assist hunters, landowners, and wildlife managers interested in deer management. The recommended techniques can be searched by type of practice (population and habitat management, or hunting lease operation), or by the suggested month. Each technique includes a detailed description and links to additional helpful publications, photographs, and videos.  These recommendations can be utilized by the app’s user to create and implement a white-tailed deer management plan to benefit deer populations.

The app, which is available for $0.99 on the iTunes store, is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch.

iTunes Description:
The White-tailed Deer Management Calendar is intended to help landowners, hunters, and wildlife managers understand what, when, and how to implement practices that benefit deer herds. Find recommended management techniques by category or month. Each technique is described in detail and includes links to helpful publications, photographs, and videos. Although created using scientific research results from Texas, these techniques have overlap with other states. This easy-to-use app will help users create and implement a plan to monitor and manage white-tailed deer populations to achieve management goals.

For more information about the release of the app, see the AgriLife Today announcement.
