Feral Hogs and Ground-Nesting Birds

Feral hogs are not usually thought of as a predator, but they can fill that role. Feral hogs are opportunistic omnivores that eat both plant and animal matter switching food sources as they are available.

Ground-nesting bird nests, such as that of the northern bobwhite and wild turkey, are susceptible because feral hogs are often rooting along the ground where these nests occur. Research conducted by AgriLife Extension wildlife specialist Dr. Jim Cathey and AgriLife Extension wildlife specialist Dr. Dale Rollins shows that feral hogs can be a significant predator to northern bobwhite and wild turkey nests.
