How Many Feral Hogs are in Texas?

Often I am asked how many feral hogs occur in Texas and the obvious answer is way too many! In most of the literature, readers find a wide range in feral hog population size. It usually falls between 1-4 million, but sometimes exaggerations are made far beyond this number. Keep in mind that none of the state agencies in Texas conduct surveys for feral hogs and further, populations surveys are difficult for any species.

Recently, my colleagues Drs. Billy Higginbotham and Roel Lopez tackled the population question based on the scientific literature. See their results in the recent AgNews article "Busting Feral Hog Myths".
