AgriLife Extension sets sights on Rio Grande wild turkey management

HUNT – Texas AgriLife Extension Service will conduct the Rio Grande Wild Turkey Management Conference on March 25-26 at the Kerr Wildlife Management Area located near Hunt at 2625 Farm-to-Market Road 1340.
Activities on March 25 start with registration at 7:30 a.m. followed by the program which runs from 8 a.m.- 5 p.m. The second day’s schedule starts at 7:30 a.m. and ends at noon.
“The program, which is open to the public, covers a wide range of vital turkey-related issues that are important to anyone managing public or private lands,” said Dr. Jim Cathey, AgriLife Extension wildlife specialist at College Station.
Cathey said sessions will include open discussions led by experts from the Natural Resources Conservation Service, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Texas Wildlife Association, National Wild Turkey Federation, Institute of Renewable Natural Resources, Texas Tech University and AgriLife Extension.
Topics the first day include turkey habitat needs, brush management, mixing livestock and turkey management, riparian management, High Plains turkey habitat selection, marketing hunts and setting proper harvest rates.
The second day’s topics include prescribed burning to enhance turkey habitat, feeding, identification of important food items and predator management.
Individual pre-registration is $25 until March 15 and $40 thereafter. The fee includes lunch the first day, refreshments and a resource CD listing more than 200 publications.
